wisdom teeth

What are the wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the set of third molars, the teeth found at the  back of the mouth. These usually erupting after the rest of you teeth have already been erupted. They usually erupting in late teen years to early twenties. Some could all four of them, some only three or two or one and some people have none.

When wisdom teeth grow misaligned they can negatively affect the other teeth in your mouth. The misaligned tooth could cause crowding, damage to adjacent teeth, and mandible nerve damage. It’s best to remove wisdom teeth at early eruption stage when the teeth roots are not completely formed and did not became ankilosed with adjacent jaw bone.

At our office Aurora Yonge Dental we recommending our patients to do not wait until complete eruption of the wisdom teeth and remove them at early eruptive stage.

Usually, in case if the patient has more than one wisdom tooth we recommend the extraction of at least two teeth-upper and lower, which are on the same side of the mouth or all four of them at the same appointment. It all depends how difficult they are and on estimated time the doctor will spend for the extractions.

At Aurora Yonge Dental Centre we believe that it is less stressful and more beneficial to the patient to go through the procedure once or twice but not four times. Also no matter how many of the wisdom teeth are removed in one appointment in all cases we are prescribing our patients pain killers, special anticeptical rinse and in some cases antibiotic to prevent the spread of infection. It is healthier to take the corse those post operative medications only once or twice, but not three or four times.

It is also important to understand that post operate pain, discomfort and recovery period are about the same if we removing one wisdom tooth, two or four and should be multiplying for the number of the wisdom teeth extracted at the same appointment.

Recovery time varies from person to person. Usually the discomfort and pain might last from 3-5 days up to 7-10 days with a full recovery could take a couple of weeks. During this time, it’s important to follow the instructions given to you by your dentist.

Also at Aurora Yonge Dental Centre we always making follow up appointment seven days after the surgery to see how the post operative healing goes.
